Fundraising efforts bring joy to disabled Tsang by donating new wheelchair to him

On Saturday 16th April 2011 a very happy event took place at the Section 21 SEA Park Rukun Tetangga (RT) centre in Petaling Jaya.

A new motorised wheelchair was donated to Beautiful Gate Foundation for the Disabled resident Tsang Qing Nian, 20, in a handing over ceremony held at the RT centre.

Petaling Jaya Utara (PJU) Federal Development Coordinator Dato’ Dr Wong Sai Hou presented the wheelchair which was bought through fundraising efforts by him, chairman Gan Keng and committee members of Section 21 SEA Park Rukun Tetangga (RT).

Dato' Dr Wong hoped the event would promote public support and awareness for the less fortunate.

"We care for the communities and we are happy that we are working with Beautiful Gate Foundation and are able to help Tsang," said Gan Keng.

Tsang and another resident Gan Mun Wai, 15, were involved in an accident in SS2 town centre while they were crossing the road in November last year. It was a terrifying experience for both of them.

Fortunately both of them escaped from any serious bodily injuries but their wheelchairs were damaged. Gan’s wheelchair was repaired and could be used again but Tsang’s was a total wreck. Tsang was stranded. He could not go anywhere without a replacement.

The incident was reported in newspapers. The SEA Park RT chairman was moved by the plight of Tsang. Gan Keng contacted Dato’ Wong and together they spearheaded the fund raising campaign to get a replacement wheelchair to aid Tsang’s mobility.

Donations from the public poured in through various fundraising and charity events including a public walkabout in SEA Park town centre where Tsang, Dato’ Wong, Gan Keng and RT committee members moved about from shop to shop to collect donations for the purchase of a new wheelchair. The response was great with many people making donation.

The event at the RT centre began with breakfast meal of fried meehoon/noodles, curry chicken, fried potato ball and dessert of red bean for the residents of the Foundation, including its executive director pastor Sia Siew Chin.

Pastor Sia gave her grateful thanks to Gan Keng, Dato’ Wong and the SEA Park RT for the donation of the wheelchair which was made possible with their assistance. Their fundraising effort shows that they care about communities.

Dato’ Wong later presented cash from the balance of the funds raised to the residents of the Foundation.

Present to witness the event was Aman Suria Residents Association (RA) chairperson Wendy Chan and Petaling Jaya Utara (PJU) community service centre chairman Yeo Ing King.
