Painting Jalan Sultan Mural to save heritage

Over 50 local artists joined forces to create awareness on the importance of preserving heritage by painting on a once neglected and dilapidated wall of a pre-war shophouse next to the carpark on Lot 49, Jalan Sultan last Saturday 15^th October 2011.

The group’s sincere efforts to support the local community in preserving the century-old buildings along a stretch of Jalan Sultan for its heritage deserved to be appreciated and praised.

The buildings are to be acquired by the authorities to build an underground rail station for the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) project.

The Jalan Sultan Mural painting event which started at 9.00 am and completed by 1.00 pm.was organised by a local daily The Star.

ICI Paints sponsored the cleaning and painting of the wall and the paints for the artists.

Mat Ramli Mansor paints a mural of Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy
who was a strong and powerful leader who developed Kuala
Lumpur into a busy commercial and mining centre during
the mid-19th century.

Dr. Wong Seng Tong paints a mural of Sultan Abdul Samad
(1857-1898), the fourth Sultan of Selangor, whom Jalan
Sultan was built and named after him in 1873.

Brian Khing, 11, a student of Emerging Youth Leadership
project paints a mural of a boy.

Krishnan Karuppiah, 63, says his painting tells the story of
the early days in the city.

Fahmi Taib, 22, a final year diploma student of fine art at
Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA)
paints a mural of a child to tell us that children are also our
heritage.

Zainal Abidin Musa paints a touching poem
on a pillar of the building.

Sharifah Zuriah Aljeffri, 73, paints the lotus water lilies to
symbolise peace and purity.

Tourist Magnus Anderson, 47, from Helsingborg, Sweden
who witnessed the artists painting the mural says he is all
for preserving old buildings for its heritage.

Jalan Sulan is named after Sultan Abdul Samad, the fourth
Sultan of Selangor, who ruled from 1857 to 1898.

Sheena Liam, 20, a Taylor’s University journalism student and Kenzo Tan, 24, a plastic surgery agent were announced the winners of the Amaze International Model Search (AIMS) 2011 competition at the grand finale held on Saturday 1^st October 2011 at Publika Dutamas in Solaris Dutams, Kuala Lumpur.

Sheena at 75cm tall and weighing 48kg outshone 10 other finalists in the female category to grab the title whilst Kenzo Tan, at 183cm tall and weighing 80kg won in the male category.
